Left Hand Brewing Company Polestar Pilsner

What the brewers say

“Once you have tasted a true Pilsner, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have seen the light, and there you will always long to return. Let Polestar guide you out of the wilderness, just as the North Star has guided explorers to their destinations and back home again. Light, crisp and elegant, pilsner is the true test of brewing prowess. Less is more.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Corn sweetness. Spicy hops aroma with slight sulfur. Some paper-like oxidation and mineral notes (could the bottle be older?). Woody like a Bavarian forest.”

Flavor: “Sweet corn and bready sweetness. Slight lemony hops character with mild bitterness but little hops flavor. Finishes clean, but oxidation detracts from an otherwise pleasant flavor.”

Overall: “Jeez, that is crystal clear! A refreshing Pilsner, but corn flavor holds it back, and the oxidation mutes the character. More like a light American lager than a Pils. Lemony hops accent. Clearly an American hand in the hops additions. Tasters were divided.”

August Schell Brewing Company Pilsner

**Aroma:** Grainy, light malt aroma with delicate, floral hops. Clean lager profile. Perhaps a bit catty. Some berry notes. **Flavor:** Upfront hop bitterness, balanced malt and hops in the middle, and a pleasant, bitter finish. Nice pils character. A touch of corn with floral hops reminiscent of gooseberry or white wine. Well balanced. **Overall:** Complex malt-hops balance. Bitterness is aggressive but appropriate. A full-flavored pils that holds your attention throughout. Very refreshing as it is, but a crisper finish would make it even more so.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company Pivo Pils

**Aroma:** Sweet, bready malt with a floral hop aroma. Hops are light in the aroma. **Flavor:** Piney, grassy noble hops balanced by clean, grainy pils malt. Some fresh watermelon notes. Finishes crisp, clean, and surprisingly bitter. Some alcohol warmth at the end. **Overall:** A delicate, but complex pilsner. Good balance of malt and hops. Lovely, refreshing, creative pils. Would pair well with chipotle-flavored popcorn. A very pilsner-y pilsner.

Deschutes Brewery Pine Mountain Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Light grain sweetness, but slight hints of oxidation. Lemony and floral but subtle hop aroma. Some earthy notes. Clean, crisp nose.” **Flavor:** “Moderate malt sweetness with a sweeter corn character. Almost wheat-like. Clean lemony fruit and mild bitterness. Crisp finish with lingering bitterness softened by slight DMS.” **Overall:** “A very refreshing, enjoyable, clean lager, though a bit out of balance. Aggressive in the aroma and finish but a bit flat in the middle. Lacks some bitterness but overall good. A great beer to pair with rich foods.”
