Glutenberg Red
What the brewers say
“Gold Award at the World Beer Cup in 2012. The use of roasted chestnuts endows this beer with toasted nuts and caramel hints and gives it a unique aromatic personality.”
What our panel thought
Aroma: “Pleasant low dank hops with some toasty roast character and a touch of caramel; a pleasant biscuity aroma followed with a light molasses grainy sweetness. Nutty character. Slight green apple and mild sweetness.”
Flavor: “A medium level of hops bitterness, with a smidgen of mint-like hops flavor, balances the subtle caramel sweetness that has notes of toast, biscuits, toffee, and even a hint of light coffee. Medium-high carbonation; green-apple notes hide behind the roast. Just a hint of smoke—finishes a bit sweet but still balanced.”
Overall: “Comes across like an ESB. The burnt roast profile adds complexity to this beer. One of the best gluten-free beers I have tried. The ‘malt’ complexity is astounding, considering that there are no gluten-malts. The beer seems very well executed on a technical level.”
