Jester King Saison Americaine

What the brewers say

“Foeder-fermented, acid-forward, American-inspired saison.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Lots of light fruity aromas, especially lemon, backed by wheat character. Berliner-like, but with more flavor and character. Funky barnyard hay.”

Flavor: “Lemon tartness and wheat notes followed by moderate barnyard funk. Finishes with lots of light sweet fruit flavors. Has a hint of sour on the back end.”

Overall: “Well-balanced, tart, modern American interpretation of a tart saison. Wheat character is appropriate and enjoyable. High carbonation adds to the liveliness. Very light and refreshing.”

Perennial Artisan Ales Foeder Saison

**Aroma:** “Moderate apricot fruity esters with medium _Brett_ tartness. Some sour mash/kettle sour dirty funk creeps through as it warms up a bit. Nice fruit notes (passion fruit), and the _Brett_ contributes apricot and peach notes up front, with just a hint of Pilsner malt sweetness.” **Flavor:** “Moderate apricot and pear notes with a mild _Brett_ note toward the end of the sip that sticks around after the taste and coats the tongue. Light on the spices with a medium amount of sweetness right at the end of the sip. Orange and vanilla up front followed by a pleasant lemon/citrus tartness. Mostly dry finish accentuates the tartness.” **Overall:** “Very estery up front with big apricot, orange, and pear notes in the flavor. Very well-executed saison that focuses squarely on the stone-fruit contributions of _Brett_, producing a beer that tastes and smells like it has been aged with peaches or apricots. Like biting into an orange creamsicle. It lacks a bit of the complexity of the best _Brett_ saisons but still very well done.”

Beachwood Blendery Kriek

Aroma: “Sweet and tart cherries mix with a slight funk and light biscuit malt, giving it an almost cherry-pie sensation. But, there’s complexity, too, with pepper, lemon, hay, and an underlying nutty note.” Flavor: “Funky and slightly cinnamon spicy flavors that meld with tart and sour fresh cherries. A slight malty sweetness cuts through the tart fruit and comes across bread-like. High carbonation gives it a nice pop to cleanse the palate. Plus, a finish with coconut, oak, and a lingering astringency gives it a slight pucker.” Overall: “Awesome! Funky and slightly sour liquid cherry pie! The carbonic bite on the finish is the perfect palate cleanser to bring you back for more!

Libertine Brewing Company Rye Saison

**Aroma:** “Big *Brett* funk on the initial aroma with some nice citrus hops aroma that sits in the back. Slight white-grape ester with some funky wet blanket that play well together. Light malt sweetness.” **Flavor:** “Earthy barnyard *Brett* with apple and slight minty spice. A bit of white pepper and peach. Tart throughout, with a dry finish and high carbonation. A sweetness hits up front with orange and lemon that follow with some nice *Brett* funk. A pepper-like spice helps to cut the sweetness. Big juicy apricot and lemon flavor with a fantastic tartness that carries all the way through. Medium hops flavor or grapefruit and lemon with a slight herbal peppery and spiciness of rye.” **Overall:** “Complex blend of fruity, spicy, and funky—nothing dominates. Tart character and high carbonation make for a very crisp and refreshing beer. Complex and all the flavors from the malt, hops, and fermentation characteristics play well together.”
