What the brewers say

“Our Scotch Barrel Aged Imperial Brown is a complex and dynamic malty beer, aged in single-malt Scotch barrels. Its aromas of toffee and nutmeg, bold flavors of creamy vanilla bean and cinnamon, and round, warm finish make it a must taste for pFriem and Scotch lovers alike.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Heather notes from a Scotch barrel. Mild citrus hops, light caramel, smoke, dates, brown sugar, and a touch of pine.”

Flavor: “Subtly smoky/sweet caramel and vanilla. Toasted, bready malt. Slight piney hops. Distinct Scotch-

barrel character (peaty, earthy, charred) that is not overpowering and complements the sweet malt character. Mostly dark fruit esters, dried cherries and currants with some apricot. Noticeable but not harsh alcoholic warmth.”

Overall: “A nice balance of sweet yet roasty malt characteristics and approachable peaty Scotch characteristics. Each aspect plays off the other and makes the beer balance well. The hops bitterness still puts this in the American Brown style.”
