Southern Grist Brewing Company LFG '23 Volume III

What the brewers say

“Bourbon barrel–aged, then aged in our maple syrup–bourbon barrel.”

What our panel thought

“A rich, layered, maple-syrup sweetness is soft and enveloping from start to finish. Subtle hints of bourbon, oak, spice linger and add depth.”

What our editors thought

“Huge marshmallow-like vanilla aroma; a touch of maple. Sweet in the sip but a light, roasty chocolate note balances, while a bourbon top-note adds a saturated spirit definition. Surprisingly open and accessible despite its concentration.”

Southern Grist Brewing Company Perpetual Composition: Blueberry (2023)

“Earthy, tart berry aroma with black-, boysen-, and blueberry and a subtle vanilla hint to push a slightly sweet impression. Sip is tart, juicy, with lively effervescence to fizzle it away, leaving a lingering berry-lemon tang.”

Southern Grist Brewing Company Franco Crisp

“Moderate floral and slightly perfumy on the nose with a slight hint of bread dough. Malt profile is quite delicate, but complex, with toasted brown bread and biscuit with a spicy but smooth phenolic note of black pepper, just a hint of cinnamon, and subtle floral, stone-fruit aspects. Finish is smooth and lingering with black pepper and floral working harmoniously.”

Southern Grist Brewing Company Gin Barrel Aged Perpetual Composition

“Aroma has a lovely gin-barrel character—not-overwhelming juniper, more eucalyptus, mint, botanicals. Perked up nicely by the lemony fermentation character, and some Peach Rings add a little sweetness. Zips across the tongue with lively acidity; the gin barrel’s minty-menthol quality is an accent. Wood provides nice tannic structure.”
