New Belgium Brewing Summer Helles

What the brewers say

“This Summer Helles pours a brilliant gold, with soft, white foam. The aroma is fresh grains and honey with a spicy-herbal twang. This lager carries the pleasant sweetness of pale and German Pils malts and levels off with the light and noble bitterness of Hallertau and Tettnang hops. Summer Helles finishes crisp and dry. Grab your banjo, crack a bottle, and let the pickin’ shine.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Medium strong spicy hop notes blend with subtle sulfur. Light pils malt background supports everything. Faint toasty sweetness. Yeasty with some papery oxidation and a very mild aroma of lemon zest and grass.”

Flavor: “Faint, soft pils malt and a restrained bitterness complement each other. Lemony and grainy. Some grainy sweetness in the aftertaste keeps it from finishing as clean as it could. Light bitterness and a nice clean lager profile.”

Overall: “A bit too light? The crisp hop bitterness saves this beer from blandness. It’s very pale, making it refreshing for summer drinking, but a bit more body wouldn’t hurt.”

Bell's Brewery, Inc. Lager of the Lakes

**Aroma:** “Light malt with subtle sulfur notes. Moderate German hops aroma. Some fruity esters, sweetness, and yeast aroma. A bit of corn-like, wheaty sweetness. Citrusy notes of lemon and orange.” **Flavor:** “Smooth malt offset by light hop bitterness. Sweet, corn-like, and wheaty. Spicy hops slide right into the finishing bitterness. Very fruity, but light alcohol flavor. Yeasty, yet clean profile. Light carbonic bite.” **Overall:** “Crisp and refreshing, a great beer to take to a cookout. Neither a pils nor a Vienna lager, just an easy-drinking beer. Finish is cleaner than an ale, yet not quite lager-like. If someone brought this to a summer barbecue, everyone would be happy.”

Schlafly / The Saint Louis Brewery Summer Lager

**Aroma:** “Sweet malty aroma. Light citrus herbal hop aroma, with a subtle pils malt background and some sulfur notes. Malty, sweet, and bready. Moderately strong diacetyl and a hint of grassy hops.” **Flavor:** “Light, bready malt with crisp lemon notes that finishes tart. Thin body, verging on watery and noticeable diacetyl. There’s a bit of pils malt underneath the butter, but I have to look for it. Finishes sweet.” **Overall:** “Refreshing, but the tart finish detracts from the expected bready malt characteristics. This is a neutral light lager that’s easy to drink—slightly bitter for the style, but good flavor.”

New Belgium Brewing Blue Paddle

**Aroma:** Light graininess with a touch of corn. Very light, sweet malt character with subtle hops in the nose. Light sulfur and soft minerals. Clean lager with no fruitiness. **Flavor:** Light, clean malt. Noble hops provide slight floral and spice character. Mildly hopped but in style. Finishes crisp, clean, and dry with a touch of astringency in the aftertaste. **Overall:** Refreshing. Nice balance of hops and malt. An excellent pilsner, perfect for a hot day. Hops are well-represented without being overwhelming. A tasty, easy-drinking beer. Clean and well made.
