Ninkasi Brewing Company Vanilla Oatis

What the brewers say

“Vanilla Oatis is characterized by a roasted front flavor, smooth rich oats, a touch of chocolate flavor, and a rich vanilla complexity imparted by whole vanilla beans. It is bigger than a traditional stout with more alcohol and body, and a touch more bitterness to keep it balanced.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Vanilla bean dominates, with chocolate and coffee complementing in the background. Huge vanilla punch, creamy roast malt, and coffee. Mild esters tie in well with the vanilla.”

Flavor: “The strong vanilla meshes with the roast nicely, creating a beer reminiscent of a root beer float. Finish is sweet, perhaps with a hint of lactose. Body is chewy and smooth. Oatmeal character is very obvious and pleasant. Very creamy.”

Overall: “This would be a fabulous dessert beer. It’s a bit too sweet and vanilla-like for pairing with much else. If you like vanilla, then this beer is a treat. The roast is a little overshadowed by the sweetness, but the vanilla character works well with the roast and chocolate malt complexity. A perfect ice cream beer.”
