Anchor Brewing Company Anchor Saison

What the brewers say

“The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. For this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Fruity sweetness dominates. Slightly earthy, spicy, funky character. Light lemon soap aroma with ginger. An oddly earthy, almost cheese-like or mushroom-like character.”

Flavor: “Sweetness is profiled and carries notes of moderate malt and lemon citrus. Lemon and ginger. Fruit character balanced by medium bitterness. Earthy, spicy notes help balance and supply a dry, graham cracker finish.”

Overall: “Very enjoyable and refreshing. Interesting choices of ingredients. Good balance of sweet citrus and earthy hops. If you like beets, you’ll like this beer. Spices could be crisper.”
