What the brewers say

“Bourbon barrel-aged with cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs, nutmeg, chile peppers.”

What our panel thought

“Both aroma and flavor are an interesting medley of flavors: Chocolate and vanilla up front slowly transition into some chipotle-like moderately spiced pepper that plays off the cinnamon, pumpkin-pie spice and ends in a sweet, lingering bitterness.”

What our editors thought

“Spicy and sweet nose, with unabashed chocolate and molé layers. Spicy sip with a punchy body finishes quickly with a dry burst.”

Area Two Experimental Brewing Barrel-Aged Chocolate Cookie Stout

“Intoxicating chocolate-pastry aroma—big, bready cookie dough. Flavor brings big coconut, toasted bread crust, fresh-baked cookie, and moderately sweet chocolate. Like warm cookies soaked in rich liqueur. Huge coconut macaroon notes. Finishes sweet, with lingering coconut and creamy roast. Slightly harsh warmth. Big, chewy mouthfeel. Chocolate pastry bomb.”

Moksa Brewing Co Soulful Memories

“Raisins, currants, carrot cake, super-rich chocolate dominate the nose. Intensely sweet with burnt caramel, toffee, cacao, coconut, bourbon, peach, a hint of allspice. The booze is the major player here.”

Firestone Walker Brewing Co Pivo

Muted classic Noble hops on the nose balance a hefty dollop of Tupelo-like honey from the malt. Pretty clean, Northern German hop bitterness, touch of sulfur, elevated Noble hop flavors with good floral and light raspberry flavor, honey graham cracker malt, and a clean, crisp finish.
