What the brewers say

“A bright golden color with assertive aromas of spice, bread crust, apple, and fennel seed. Citrus, oak, and anise give way to warm vanilla notes followed by a slightly tart finish.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Fresh. Some citrus notes, with stone fruit, a nice peach character up front, and a light pineapple, apricot, banana, and mango note. A touch of funk as it warms that adds a nice level of complexity.”

Flavor: “Lots of juiciness and sweetness up front, like cane sugar, but with a healthy amount of tartness to keep it balanced. Stone fruits with some wine, oak, orange, and slight lemon. A bit of malt, but also some corn chip notes from young Brett. Moderate-to-low carbonation, a touch of tannic character for body, and a Sweet Tarty flavor that lingers.”

Overall: “A lot of sugar-like sweetness in this beer. The funk is nice but moderate, with some citrus and fruity notes that add to the beer. A tasty beer with a lot of fun, bright flavors that could probably use a little more time to round out. The tannins in the finish help balance, but the low carbonation is a bit disappointing.”

Wiley Roots Funk Yo Couch Nelson Sauvin

Gin, grapefruit pith, lemon peel, low oak, and background funk. Earthy, citrus-forward funk carries into huge tropical-fruit flavor. Harmonious. Some gentle acidity brightens the flavors. The Brett brings it all together. Digging this.

Perennial Artisan Ales Stepping into Tomorrow

Peppery aroma with woody, earthy, leathery _Brett_ evident in the background; low, spicy hops. Funk-forward flavor, with notes of wood, mushroom, light fruit, white pepper, and cardamom. Lingering tartness. Big but balanced. Well-made but lacking in complexity.

**Aroma:** “Heavy funk in your face, but a good mix of pineapple, peach, and hay. Light spice and subtle sweetness. Ripe pineapple, juicy mango, and peach stone-fruit _Brett_ funk. White wine and white pepper.” **Flavor:** “Prominent tartness, verging on sour, but moderate initial sweetness maintains the balance. The funkiness carries all the way through, like a P Funk megamix, with rustic barnyard flavors and more tropical pineapple and mango. Good carbonation keeps it light on the tongue. Nice earthy funk.” **Overall:** “An unapologetic funky beer that gives you the entire showcase of _Brett_ flavors on top of a well-crafted base. Great balance of citrus and stone-fruit character and light _Brett_ funk. Good juicy notes and nice carbonation with good acidity and funk. This defines what a tart funky saison should be to me.”
