Jackie O's Brewery BA Dark Apparition

What the brewers say

"A truly decadent brew that is intended to be poured into your favorite snifter."

What our panel thought

"Nose of soft whiskey, raisin, chocolate, vanilla. Alcohol out front in flavor, with rich caramel malt, treacle, dark chocolate, raisin mincemeat, sweet cherry. Thick, rich body. Long-lasting kiss of whiskey warmth in the finish."

What our editors thought

"Bold nose—balsamic reduction on charred figs, dark cherry, dark-roasted peanuts, with port and whiskey overtones. Silky sip of roast coffee, faint cherry, light hazelnut, and long-lingering dark-chocolate bitterness."

Epic Brewing Double Barrel Big Bad Baptist 2016

__Aroma:__ “Like almond liqueur, with a gentle blend of roast, chocolate, and coffee. The coffee brings an earthiness for complexity. Notes of leather, oak, and vanilla bring a decent blend of barrel and flavor. Very clean overall.” __Flavor:__ “Well-blended roastiness from the malt and coffee, and some light barrel character helps pull the pieces together with notes of tannin, leather, oak, and vanillin. Nutty caramel, sherry, and a fruity yeast profile that includes dry cherries make for a fruitcake effect. Coats the mouth without being cloying. A deeper dominant flavor note than others in the category, heavy on bass notes.” __Overall:__ “Tells you up front to slow down—it’s a little hot from the booze—but a very nice balance of chocolate, coffee, and oak, which all work together to balance the sweetness. The fruitcake notes—dried cherries, almonds, and bread—worked great. I like this a lot.”

Cycle Brewing 6 Years Beers with Mexican Vanilla Beans

Aroma explodes with sweet vanilla, marshmallow, and milk chocolate; lighter cocoa and coffee notes. Flavor, however, offers ample roast and enough oak tannins to temper that sweet vanilla flood.

Orpheus Brewing Stouts All the Way Down: The Vanilla Chronicles: Mexican

Deep bourbon and chocolate aroma. Rich, thick body. Layers of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, roast, vanilla, spice. Sweet finish with chocolate, fruit notes, hint of soy sauce. Complementary alcoholic warmth. Sweet, but balanced within over-the-top richness.
