Dustbowl Brewing Co. Barrel-aged Blend

What the brewers say

“A blend of whiskey barrel–aged Great Impression Stock Ale, Soul Crusher, Black Blizzard, and brandy barrel–aged Public Enemy Baltic Porter.”

What our panel thought

“The nose doesn’t hold a candle to the amazing flavor of this blend. A happy marriage of char, toast, and barrel character with spirits, sweetness.”

What our editors thought

“Ginger cookies with molasses, and a bit of warming bourbon, coconut, and vanilla. Generalized dark spicy malt and boozy barrel trades definition for ease of drinking.”

Goose Island Brewery Bourbon County Brand Stout Proprietor’s 2015

**Aroma:** “Moderate fruity aroma (black currant, plum, cherry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, pomegranate) with medium chocolate and coffee notes. Light alcohol note. As it warms, more sweetness and alcohol notes. Moderate caramel. Light roasty foundation reminds me that it’s a stout.” **Flavor:** “Rich sweetness, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, slight soy sauce. Complex mocha/caramel/roast malt, esters, and smooth warming alcohol (spicy) set up a perfect storm of richness. Big dark fruits (cherry, blueberry, blackberry, currant, raspberry) and bright acidity. This is a rich mouthful.” **Overall:** “Big fruity sweetness with cherry and blackberry notes. Moderate alcohol warming and a medium amount of chocolate. A 10-ounce pour of this might last me quite a while. A great sipping beer with the intense sweetness of a dessert wine. Wow—I’d like to curl up with a full bottle of this.”

Jack's Abby Barrel-Aged Framinghammer

Aroma: “Hints of booze, chocolate, and toasted coconut. Barrel components stand out—some wood but mostly whiskey.” Flavor: “Prominent smooth, creamy milk chocolate and coffee. Low supporting hops. Spicy woody alcohol flavor. Complex malt richness with toffee and coconut is accentuated by the barrel-aged qualities that add a tannic wood dryness, some toasted coconut, and a pleasant underlying boozy warmth. Finish is rich, but not overly cloying.” Overall: “Great underlying Baltic porter with interesting barrel-aged character. It certainly comes across pretty strong and a bit boozy, but you’re paying for a barrel-aged beer so it should slap you around a bit.”

Reuben's Brews Chocolate Box: Hazelnut Praline

Earthy, nutty, bourbon aroma. As it warms: vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, and a sense of age. Rich flavors: chocolate and roast coffee, also vanilla, caramel, coconut. Subtle hazelnut and earthy, oak-derived leather.
