What the brewers say

“Our first Anniversary barleywine, was born out of the spirit and ethos of this brewery: no boundaries, no limits, punk as f**k. Aged for a year in bourbon barrels, it’s hardly something to take lightly.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Vanilla, caramel, rummy spice notes. Light coconut and cocoa, mild tobacco. The party is a little subdued by oxidation that hovers between cardboard and sherry.”

Flavor: “Dark fruits, leather, a little tobacco. Plenty of vanilla character from the barrel. Some rum-like molasses and spice. Nice alcohol support, with lots of esters. Strong bourbon/rum avor. Oxidation is more sherry than cardboard. Sweet and smoky—the barrel character is pleasant but sometimes overpowers the base beer.”

Overall: “Malt is good but not overly complex. The vanilla from the bourbon barrel grows a lot as it warms. More malt complexity and dialing back the barrel character could take this beer to the next level.”

Broken Strings Brewery Have A Cigar

“The nose is packed with figs, cherry, dates soaked in vanilla-tinged bourbon. The taste evokes a caramel- and spirits-filled chocolate. A big, chewy drinking experience with some rough edges.”

Reuben's Brews Barnacles

“Fruity! Brown sugar nose. Sweet banana-bread (headed toward fruit cake) coated in more brown sugar flows through the mouth. Sugary sweet on the finish. Aggressive dessert-like treat with a touch of bitterness that fell into baking mishaps.”

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel-Aged Leon Russian Imperial Stout

**Aroma:** “Moderate roast up front with vanilla, chocolate, moderate wet earth, a bit of acidity, light apple/pear fruit notes, moderate caramel notes, big sweetness, moderate umami. Lots of cherry. None of this should distract you from the brandy-like alcoholic warmth. There is plenty of vanilla and leathery oak to justify the barrel-aged label.” **Flavor:** “Big sweetness is immediately apparent with moderate coconut, light vanilla, smooth roast, a touch of earthy oak, strong caramel, light plum, touch of cherry, touch of umami. Expected chocolate notes. Medium alcohol note with appropriate carbonation. Roasty at the end of the sip. Very well blended with a touch of heat on the finish. Great wood character.” **Overall:** “This beer really showcases the roast, chocolate, and dark stone fruit throughout. Very pleasant. Big but not overwhelming.”
