Bend Brewing Barrel Aged Trade War

What the brewers say

"Notes of bittersweet baker's chocolate and oak dominate with subtle spice notes and a full body."

What our panel thought

"Aroma of dark chocolate, red fruits—raspberry, dark cherry. Nice breadth of roast flavors—chocolate, dried raspberry, coffee, toffee. Creamy body; finish leans acrid. Tobacco and vanilla notes emerge. Fruity character works with malt-chocolate and barrel-vanilla. Like a strong export stout."

What our editors thought

"Nose with light licorice, dark chocolate, pronounced oak tannin, a touch of cardboard. The sip offers woody vanilla and tannic spice touches, giving structure to creamy dark-chocolate body. Compelling."

Hailstorm Stop, Collaborate & Listen

__Aroma:__ “Vanilla and caramel are the first impression, with strong cherry and stone-fruit esters and a holiday spice undertone that might be cinnamon. Mild cocoa and chocolate malt, with rice that lends some creaminess. At first it was a bit odd, but the blend reminded me of rice pudding. Definitely not a ‘macho’ stout nose, with so much sweetness on hand.” __Flavor:__ “Rather sweet, verging on cloying, and enhanced by warming holiday spices. Big cherry esters. Sweet cocoa, vanilla, roast coffee, and light heat from the cinnamon. Mild alcohol warmth and spiciness, complemented by the roastiness. It’s like a melted chocolate candy bar, with the gentle sweetness of rice pudding.” __Overall:__ “What a fun beer. Aside from the initial oddness on the nose, I really liked it all around. It’s quite sweet, which hides the alcohol well, and is probably well-suited to those who like sweeter beers. It’s like rice pudding with cinnamon and some dark chocolate shavings on top.”

Two Roads Brewing Espressway Coffee Stout

Fantastic, intense coffee presence—subtle, almost fruity, without vegetal or ashy character. Somewhat thin; layers of coffee and more coffee balancing an understated stout—pleasant, dry, bitter. Finishes smooth. More sweetness would help round things out.

Bend Brewing Hophead Imperial IPA

Soft aroma; dank, sweaty, Szechuan-peppery notes partly overtake tropical-citrus. Easily likeable flavor makes up for it—round, crackery-malty, juicy—with firm bitterness that plays well with alcohol, lingering as zesty resin. Danker, rougher aspects in hop flavors contained by nice malt blanket.
