Blackberry Farm Brewery BFB Pilsner

What the brewers say

"A classic Pilsner brewed with Tennessee-grown 2-row Violetta malt."

What our panel thought

"Classic and pleasant noble-hops aromas and flavors that are well-balanced by a clean and malty, but not sweet, backbone. Enough carbonation to lighten the beer but not strip it of its classically nuanced flavors. Bitter enough to notice, yet malty enough to let the bitterness shine. A touch of carbonic bite gives the slight impression of minerality."

What our editors thought

"Malt-forward with a compelling biscuit flavor and a light noble bitterness for structure. Sophisticated in its simplicity."

Wild Provisions Beer Project 14°P Czech-Style Dark Lager

The nose paints a picture of dark malt carrying a sack of figs, raisins, and caramel and a filigree of dark roast coffee. The flavor fills in some details—a roast-forward, bitter base, a touch of raisin, and bread crust. The roasty finish cuts that richer picture down to size. Tasty, but a little less roast would help.

Girdwood Brewing Company Crow Creek Gold

Soft, lemony aromatics. Nicely balanced, rounded flavor—soft lemon notes with a decent amount of hop-bitterness to balance it. Tart, lemon-meringue flavor. Well balanced fruity pilsner. Dry finish. Very light, not quite thin. Elegant interpretation. Very enjoyable.

Schlafly Pilsner

Aroma: “Moderate floral and spicy hops aromas, slightly perfume-like. A touch of sulfur dances on top of the Pilsner malt backbone. There’s a touch of lemon and orange character on retronasal.” Flavor: “Malt sweetness hits up front with biscuity character. Medium body is nice and holds up the beer well. A little lemon. Some soft floral notes and spice add complexity. Low on bitterness, but enough to balance the sweetness. Restrained bitterness lets the malt and hops flavor complexity linger on the finish.” Overall: “Clean, easy-drinking beer with a nice balance of noble hops and malt complexity. Crisp, almost effervescent, mouthfeel.”
