Bierstadt Lagerhaus Oktoberfest (2023)

What the brewers say

“Oktoberfest märzen.”

What our panel thought

“Brilliant copper color, good foam. Pleasant, mellow dark-bread notes, like pumpernickel drizzled with light honey, with some welcome if subtle herbal hops. Integrated flavor—light sweetness fully melds with a smooth, restrained bitterness, drying out beautifully, getting some lift from ample carbonation. Everything a good Oktoberfest should be.”

What our editors thought

“Beautiful copper color and clarity. In the aroma, darker bread-crust notes, with a faint noyaux sweetness, get a boost from the nominally floral hops. That sweet bread note feels both inviting and curt, with a warm welcome that doesn’t linger overlong. The same can be said of the sip—the initial burst of malt quickly dissipates into a beautiful balance of soft stone-fruit sweetness and light hop spice, tilted on the lighter side without sacrificing any flavor along the way. It’s a master class in capturing malt flavor without heft—indulgent and restrained, simultaneously.”

Bierstadt Lagerhaus Oktoberfest

“Restrained aroma of light, sweet caramel, and a light zesty quality that emerges as it warms. The sweetness continues into the flavor, adding some complexity of breadcrumb and a hint of cookie dough. The sweeter profile can be a polarizing fest interpretation, but gentle honey-like sweetness is fully integrated with a soft, herbal bitterness.”

pFriem Family Brewers Czech Dark Lager

“Light brown in color, bright; solid, lasting head. Toasted bread, chocolate, hints of coffee, caramel, and sulfur coupled with strong, floral, Noble-hop aroma. Rich yet restrained malt flavor: toast, crust, light chocolate. Bitterness almost perfectly balanced to keep the malt in check. Super-clean. Refreshing finish. Lightly sweet malt begs for another taste. Elegant, creamy carbonation brings all the flavors together in wonderful synergy. Herbal hop flavor might be a touch strong for style, but it plays so well.”

Old Thunder Brewing Mild Stillage

“Great malt-forward aroma, with notes of caramel and toffee and an inviting toasted nuttiness, supported by warm toasted bread and faint molasses notes. Slight red apple rounds out the aromatics. Pomme fruit character dominates the palate, balanced by notes of roast and toast. Light hop bitterness keeps the malt sweetness in balance. A great malt finish with a balance of toast, coffee, caramel, toffee. Reminiscent of classic mild ales.”
