What the brewers say

“Rooted in tradition, this malty lager is inspired by some of our favorite German brewers.”

What our panel thought

“Excellent golden color. Aroma of apples, dark bread, some caramel. Malt breadiness starts the flavor ride into middle bitterness, lingering on the finish. Slightly astringent and estery. Alcohol fairly present.”

What our editors thought

“Deep golden color suggests stronger malt, while a light apple and slightly green vegetal note drive the nose. Malt pushes forward in the sip with light caramel next to a sturdy but well-integrated hop bitterness. Finishes a touch chalky.”

Ballast Point Lager

Greets you with a welcoming whiff of herbal coolness, a little Vicks, a little peppermint, maybe some eucalyptus. That carries through to the flavor with an added bit of chalkiness. Finishes clean, semidry, and maybe with a touch of alcohol heat. It's intriguing and likely a beer that people will either love or hate.

pFriem Family Brewers Helles Lager

“Light, sweet malt aroma with a touch of floral Noble hops and melon. Fresh doughy grain, sweet with just enough grassy hop flavor to keep things interesting. Light bitterness holds everything in place. Soft on the mouthfeel, with a lithe but endearingly structured sweet finish. Bright, clean, and well-crafted.”

Breakside Brewery Breakside Pilsner

Floral hop aroma with citrus hints and an evident but complementary minerality. On the palate, crackery malt character cuts through perfumey hop-bitterness. Light body, any unnecessary heft has been carved out. Extremely clean. Beautifully crafted.
