Bourgogne des Flandres Belgian Grape Ale

What the brewers say

“Dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin. Sparkling, dry, subtle acidity, a little funkiness.”

What our panel thought

“Nose blends white-wine grapes, some clove, a touch of barnyard funk. Champagne effervescence, cider-like body. Dry, austere, white-wine finish with some saison fermentation complexity.”

What our editors thought

“Refined white-wine nose with a touch of fresh herbs, faint floral notes, a bit of green melon. Gentle and elegant in the sip, with a light freshness and beautifully expressed white-grape notes.”

New Planet Belgian Ale

**Aroma:** “Strong cider-like aroma and sweetness with notes of bubble gum and some fruity esters (pear and apple). Belgian phenolic yeast aromatics— particularly clove. Notes of cane sugar.” **Flavor:** “The phenolic yeast is not playing well with the sorghum flavors and aromas. Reminiscent of a dry cider, with very subtle Belgian ester character (pear and bubble gum). Finishes dry and astringent with a medium-high carbon- ation and low hops bitterness.” **Overall:** “Sweet yet dry and tart. The green apple and cider-like characteris- tics detract from the beer experience, and the finish is astringent. Lacks much of any Belgian yeast character, as fruitiness is certainly grain-derived. Much more cidery than beery. The tanginess helps differentiate it from other gluten-free beers for those looking for that sort of thing.”

Funky Buddha Undefeated Saison

Aroma: “Effervescent and light on the nose. White grape and wine like. Slightly earthy with pepper, guava, and spice.” Flavor: “Pepper, honey, spicy phenols, autolyzed yeast, aggressive alcohol, medium bitterness, and extreme effervescence that causes tingling on the inside of the cheeks. Finishes absolutely bone dry. Throughout there’s a little lemon, some earthy hay-like funk, and some dry white grape wine flavors.” Overall: “Massive rocky head means you have to be a little patient to get much character out of the beer—they’re going for the champagne thing here—but there is really nice complexity after that subsides a bit. The grape complements the saison very well.”

Epic Brainless Belgian-style Golden Ale

Aroma: “Moderate stone fruit, citrus, and pear with some bready malt and low floral spice in the background. Lemongrass fruitiness with a touch of phenolic. Light tartness.” Flavor: “More pear comes out in the flavor with bready malt. Moderate sweetness, with notes of honey and a bit of caramel, fades into the finish with moderately low bitterness and alcohol warmth to balance. Some nice complexity and smoothness. Vanilla builds in the lingering aftertaste.” Overall: “Classic Belgian golden strong with pear and citrus esters up front that fade into a bit of malt and a fairly dry boozy finish. Enjoyable body with a balance of sweetness, fruitiness, and spice character.”
