Burial Beer Co Anno Domini MMXXI (2021) Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout with Coconut, Hazelnut, and Mexican Vanilla Bean

What the brewers say

"This Imperial Stout is aged in Caribbean rum barrels for over a year, and after racking back to steel, we aged it on accompanying doses of macaroon coconut, toasted hazelnuts and Mexican vanilla bean. Sip longingly on toasted coconut daiquiris, hazelnut rum cake, drizzled with vanilla creme anglaise and washed down with a stiff Nutella frapp with Bacardi floater."

What our panel thought

“Aroma starts with big black molasses, then an interplay of bitter chocolate, vanilla, coconut. On the palate: bitter chocolate, moderate tannins, slightly astringent. Complex and fun melding of all the adjuncts. Very enjoyable. Light on the nut and rum character.”

What our editors thought

“Spicy cocktail nose with a nutty-earthy note and an almost pad thai–like sweet-spicy-nutty axis.”

Burial Beer Co Ninth Passing

“Caramel, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, coconut in the nose. Rich coconut, an interesting touch of spice, some spiced oak on top, sweet in the middle, medium in the finish. A slight sweetness lingers on the tongue well into the finish.”

Jackie O’s Brewery Coconut & Vanilla Rum Barrel Oil of Aphrodite

Boozy nose with aged dark-malt character, hints of dried cherries and soy sauce. A bit thin, but with rich dark fruit and chocolate. Dry roasted finish. Strong rum and vanilla notes add a nice spiciness to the swallow.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Co Double Barrel Assassin

“Lots of red wine-like notes over more typical chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. Rich dark-malt chocolate flavor with enough booze to complement.”
