Burial Beer Co Dark

What the brewers say

Inspired by Northern brewing traditions, using German barley and hopped mildly with Bohemian hops.

What our panel thought

Inviting aroma with a complex bouquet of roasted malts with hints of coffee, baker’s chocolate. Clean, crisp, yet robust flavor is full of toast and roast but finishes smooth and avoids any harsh bitterness. It’s softer than a German schwarzbier, but a not-so-distant cousin. Straightforward in concept, but supremely executed.

What our editors thought

A toasted nutty note on the nose with faint burnt caramel. A significant bitterness (part hops, part dark malt) gives it a gently rounded edge with softer caramel malt notes. Finishes dry but gently for an endearing soft landing.

Burial Beer Co Fade Dark Lager

“A clean roast malt aroma with hints of coffee, dark caramel, and a touch of herbal hops gives way to a flavor profile that introduces some nice dark-chocolate notes. Super-clean and easy-drinking with a nice subtle chocolate sweetness early that slowly fades into a pleasant but restrained floral bitterness that lingers into the finish.”

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. Vujà Dé: Landlord

“Grainy, bready, lightly toasted malt aroma. Medium hops aroma, woody and lightly spicy. Smooth, slightly sweet malt flavor. Hop bitterness is firm, slightly resinous, fresh-tasting. Aftertaste shows more hops, some woody notes. Classic, easy-drinking, thirst-quenching.”

Live Oak Brewing Co Dark

“Inviting roasted malt notes of coffee, toast, and a hint of chocolate balanced by perfume-like hops. The finish is clean and crisp with a nice bitter roast malt note. Balanced complexity from start to finish.”
