Burial Beer Co Ulfbehrt Foudre-Aged Baltic Porter

What the brewers say

Forged from German and British malts and traditionally lagered in our American oak foeder, our Baltic porter is made with respect for those that came before it.

What our panel thought

Pleasant but subtle aroma: light roast, licorice, coffee, bitter chocolate, caramel. In the flavor, malt sweetness with chocolate, caramel, nuts; spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander. Full body. Nuanced and interesting. Finishes fairly sweet.

What our editors thought

Unassuming nose downplays floral and citrus notes. Flavor unleashes some orange citrus, highlighted by a vanilla touch against the strong chocolate body. Not as texturally rich as some, but an artful combination with unfolding layers.

Incendiary Brewing Company Baltic Porter

Inviting nose—hints of licorice, cinnamon, nutmeg, coffee, and sweet cream play with caramel and chocolate malt. In the flavor, roast malt emerges, imparting coffee-like bitterness and nuttiness—chocolate-covered cherry, cocoa dust, coconut, light caramel sweetness. Aftertaste lingers on sweet mocha.

Dovetail Brewery Baltic-Style Porter

Aroma ranges from toasted breadcrust to treacle—roasty, with accents of hazelnut, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, plum, and coffee. Balanced, subtle sweetness in the flavor, roast and caramel with notes of chocolate, praline, sherry. Body is lighter than expected, but the subtlety makes you wish everything was turned up just a few notches.

Baere Brewing Company Breathe Out

“Nose has notes of black tea, rum cake, and blackstrap molasses. Flavor is tobacco, anise, brown sugar—but varies a tick from typical with distinctive herbal character. Deep, decadent malt profile aligns with oaky vanillins. The blend’s layered approach is worth seeking on a cold night.”
