What the brewers say

Hazy IPA hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Mosaic.

What our panel thought

Tropical-fruit nose with a bit of cedar and coconut. Lively mouthfeel with pleasant tropical-fruit flavors. Pret-ty standard NEIPA. Bright sweet finish feels a bit heavy but makes up for it in flavor profile. Feels like there is some lactose in there.

What our editors thought

Nelson Sauvin–style white-wine notes prevail with undertones of pear, lychee, and kiwi, but with only the mildest funky diesel notes that typically accompany. The sip is a touch chalky with a hint of herbal spice that gives structure to the tropical-fruit notes.

Metazoa Brewing Hoppopotamus

Tropical mango, passion-fruit aroma; soft edges of grapefruit, caramel, pine. High hop bitterness with floral, piney flavor, balanced by light caramel sweetness—a harmonious malt cushion. Clean finish, nothing to trouble more gulps. Standout IPA in retro form.

New Belgium Brewing 1985 IPA

Strawberry, peach, mango, guava dominate aroma. Low bitterness up front allows the complex berry and stone fruit to play without interference. Almost like hopped fruit nectar. Soft mouthfeel. Finishes dry and clears your palate quickly, inviting you to take another sip.

Burial Beer Hawkbill

Aroma: “Smells like straight pineapple juice with a little cantaloupe. Maybe a touch of malt graininess in the background and some light mint as it warms.” Flavor: “Like a mango-and-pineapple carbonated milkshake. Large creaminess that suggests the lactose of milkshake IPAs. Tropical fruit dominates with not much else showing up, but there’s a significant bitterness in the background that keeps it from being a cloying experience. A classic NEIPA juice bomb.” Overall: “Everything a good NEIPA should be. The soft and creamy mouthfeel, bright tropical fruit flavors from the hops, and balanced bitterness come together in an exceptional way.”
