Weldwerks Coconut Medianoche

What the brewers say

“Brewed with copious amounts of chocolate malts, crystal malts, and flaked oats, then boiled continuously for almost 36 hours. After fermentation, this massive imperial stout was aged in 7-year-old Breckenridge Distillery bourbon barrels for 18 months, then aged on almost 25 lbs/bbl of toasted coconut.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “So. Much. Coconut. Sharp booze followed by mellow chocolate. Like a Mounds candy bar with a shot of vodka.”

Flavor: “A Mounds candy bar. Dark chocolate and roast paired with toasted coconut. Great balance of the adjuncts. Finish is sweet, as you would expect, but still relatively balanced given the other significant aspects of the beer. Nice warming alcoholic boozy note on the finish without coming across overly hot.”

Overall: “A coconut-focused beer, to say the least. The coconut stands out from the chocolate. The finish is sweet and boozy, dark chocolate, with some dried-fruit bourbon. Really nice!”

WeldWerks Brewing Co. Double Barrel 1910 Medianoche

“Intense barrel flavors—vanilla, coconut, cinnamon, with decadent fudge and upfront alcoholic sweetness. Compelling hints of almond, cherry. Barrel character really shines.”

WeldWerks Coconut Medianoche

Coconut-coffee aroma; low roast. Coffee-soaked Mounds flavor—caramelized sugar, coconut hunks. Rich. Insanely thick. Intense coconut-coffee flavors obscure the underlying stout.

Coronado German Chocolate Cake 2018

Aroma: “Coconut and chocolate up front. There’s a nice roasted malt character that’s also very prominent and works nicely with the adjuncts. The barrel isn’t overpowering but provides some whiskey and vanilla to tie it all together.” Flavor: “Intense dark bitterness up front: roast, dark chocolate, dried fruit, with a drying oak character. Some residual sweetness, but the bitter qualities dominate overall. Pleasant nutty coconut on the finish. Lingering vanilla and chocolate on the swallow. Some nice warming alcohol notes.” Overall: “Sweet and smooth. The coconut comes through in the aroma, and the chocolate dominates the flavor. Very much a desert beer because of the sweetness and full mouthfeel.”
