Creature Comforts Brewing Co. The Curious No. 16

What the brewers say

This bière de coupage-inspired beer is made using the classic approach of blending older beer with younger beer.

What our panel thought

Earthy mushroom funk, apricot, floral, peach, lemon, herbal—classic, rustic nose. Moderate, well-balanced acidity. Nice depth of flavors—biscuit, apricot, peach, light leather, funk, citrus. Nice, dry finish with lingering fruit. Tasty, drinkable, delightful.

What our editors thought

Light mineral funk on the nose; soft lemon and a berry/tea-like tannic touch. The sip is round, continuing the lemon-tea Arnold Palmer theme. Acidity is reined in, finishing with a soft, delicate fading funk beat.

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. Barrel No. 64

Lovely—bright gold with lush foam. Soft aroma with stone fruit, lemon-lime, light spice, nutty grain, and low, earthy, gueuze-like funk. Gently tart acidity finds harmony with soft bitterness on fluffy carbonation; bright stone-fruit notes in the foreground, lemon-limeade at mid-stage, with a grassy-earthy funk backdrop. Dry finish, lingering stone fruit. Round and harmonious. Beautifully balanced, refreshing. Fabulous.

Scratch Brewing Company Strawberry Sumac

Strawberries blend with a sweet, fruity/spicy malt character, suggesting a Belgian golden. Nicely balanced acid and fruit. The flavor stays harmonious, offering a light tart lemony balance to the strawberry sweetness and pulling along some peach. Each sip brings more depth from everything but the strawberries, whether it's a spicy tingle or citrus brightness. Lingers nicely.

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. Always a Pleasure

Intoxicating aroma—woody, earthy, lemony, spicy. Background funk: damp cellar, fungus. Dry flavor with acidic bite and quick lemon follow-up; fermentation-driven fruit is accentuated by hops. Herbal qualities add a refined note. Lemon and wood/spice contend for dominance.
