Crooked Stave Coffee Baltic Porter

What the brewers say

“Through conditioning our Baltic porter with freshly roasted coffee beans, we strive for a balanced coffee character, adding dark sugar, plums, and cocoa notes to the robust porter base.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong coffee vies for attention with the roasted malt. Coffee wins.”

Flavor: “Very rich toast, chocolate, and coffee. Moderately sweet. The hops just balance the sweetness. Slight green-pepper back note. Finishes a touch on the sweet side. Malt holds on awhile. Coffee bitterness comes through on the finish, but given the lingering sweetness, it balances well.”

Overall: “The underlying beer is perhaps a bit heavy, but the coffee additions add complexity and yield an interesting beer overall.”

Pontoon Brewing Company Battle of the Baltics

“Smooth and restrained roast character in the aroma, with a clean ester profile. The flavor has a touch of rough dark chocolate with a slight pepper-flesh edge. Clean lager character throughout with supporting bitterness that doesn’t distract.”

Wayfinder Beer Gravity Drop Baltic Porter

Barrista-borne aroma—roast malt with nice nuances of coffee, toffee, browned toast, brown sugar. Flavor tones it down—sweet coffee and nutty character enhance the bitter/sweet interaction. Lacks the richer malt spectrum; body is a bit mild. Assertive but pleasant hop-bitterness. Smooth warmth.

Crooked Stave Coffee Baltic Porter

Aroma: “Nice fruity coffee character, hints of roast and chocolate, and faint dark fruit. Really nice and inviting.” Flavor: “Pretty sweet overall. Lots of chocolate and caramel. Some dry toastiness on the finish, with maybe a bit of soy sauce. Bitterness comes primarily from the roast. The coffee additions are really well done and accentuate the roast character and add some subtle underlying fruitiness.” Overall: “Fantastic aroma. The coffee additions add a lot of pleasant complexity throughout, but the balance is a bit too sweet overall leaving a heavy, almost cloying finish.”
