Foothills Brewing Dead and Berried

What the brewers say

Coffee notes, balanced by the tart sweetness of fresh blackberries, aged in bourbon barrels.

What our panel thought

Spicy dark malt accentuated by the bourbon-barrel character. The fruit additions add a lively tartness. Finish is soft for the style, with a fruity sweetness. Much more drinkable than many examples of the style.

What our editors thought

Light roasty coffee notes in the nose are overwhelmed by vivid, sharp berry notes. The flavor is awkwardly sharp—a bit too dry, low in barrel character, and a bit too roasty—and the berry ends up adding extra acidity without the accompanying richness.

Foothills Brewing Dead & Berried Imperial Stout

“Dark berries, fudge, roast, and licorice on the nose. In the flavor, robust roast, berry tartness, and bitterness shove sweetness to the back. Tootsie Roll and caramel as it warms.”

Elysian Brewing Dragonstooth Stout

“Muted aroma with soft hints of espresso, chocolate. Light pine/citrus hoppiness, dark roast, caramel body to balance. Well-integrated and balanced malt richness with some underlying alcoholic heat.”

Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee 2016

__Aroma:__ “The oak and roast from the malt play well with the coffee character. The coffee varietal gives off notes of cherry, plum, and raisin. Notes of jalapeño, vanilla, caramel, and bourbon, with maybe a touch of tobacco.” __Flavor:__ “Rich chocolate and coffee throughout, with the aforementioned dark-fruit esters. The well-blended oak character brings vanillin and just enough tannin to provide a little extra balance. Burnt toast, mild roast, and chocolate malt make for great malt backing. A rich flavor bomb.” __Overall:__ “This is a tasty example of imperial stout, with balanced oak, charred wood, alcohol heat, and a burnt bread malt character. If you’re in the mood for a massive coffee, barrel-aged stout, this is a great choice. It’ll keep you honest with the alcohol, but won’t disappoint on the flavor side of things. The beer finishes dry for as big as it is, encouraging sip after sip.”
