DESTIHL Brewery Weissenheimer Hefeweizen

What the brewers say

“Refreshing classic German-style hefeweizen.”

What our panel thought

“Slightly grainy, fresh-baked bread nose, followed by restrained and balanced banana and clove. Subtle sweetness mingles with floral and pepper-like spicy bitterness in the flavor with a nice soft mouthfeel to support it. Finishes quite dry as the bitter side outbalances the sweet notes.”

What our editors thought

“Slightly funky tropical fruit nose adds a touch of sulfur to the mix. The sip swings back toward banana and pepper, with a broad gentle fluffy malt.”

KC Bier Co. Hefeweizen

“Aroma has the expected hefe notes with an unexpected element of tobacco. Fruity esters are assertive, with a tart citrus and wheat background. High carbonation keeps it refreshing, with a lingering sweetness.”

Live Oak Brewing Co Hefeweizen

“Big bready aroma precedes a slight lemon note and just a hint of bubblegum. Sweet malt—fresh-baked bread dough—with sufficient phenolic spice to balance. The malty sweetness coats the mouth and lingers before a gentle bitterness strips it away. Easy drinking.”

Coronado Brewing Company Islander IPA

__Aroma:__ “Passion fruit, dank, pineapple, tangerine, herbal/grassy—there’s a lot going on but it works well, if only the hops aroma were a little stronger. Light to medium malt aroma of lightly toasted bread.” __Flavor:__ “Slightly balanced on the side of malt for the style, but with enough bitterness to carry the sweetness. Hops are citrus and floral with hints of lemon, orange, lemongrass, passion fruit, and a touch of dank. A toasty bread backbone. Finish is slightly grassy and has just enough bitterness.” __Overall:__ “Very complex intense hops character with lots of fruit and an underlying dank character. Malt bill is very clean with just a bit of sweetness up front. Bitterness is firm but controlled. Very well made. The blend of sweetness and hop flavors worked well in this beer.”
