Wibby Double Dunkel

What the brewers say

“One of our most popular seasonals, Double Dunkel is an imperial dunkel brewed with lots of chocolate malt and cacao nibs. We lager it on Madagascar vanilla beans. This is a highly drinkable, slightly dangerous lager that is smooth and has a nice crisp lager finish.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Moderately strong toasted malt up front with dark chocolate, rich Munich-type malt, and roast behind that. There’s a touch of vanilla in the background. Slight earthy noble-hops aromas.”

Flavor: “The vanilla really comes through in the flavor with a lot of rich malt and chocolate. There’s a nuttiness as well and a slight moderate sweetness up front that builds into a moderately strong sweetness before fading. The whole combination reminds one of Little Debbie Nutty Bars. The finish has a moderate bitterness and a low alcohol warmth.”

Overall: “The vanilla works well overall and isn’t overpowering. Nice malt complexity. The sweetness with the big vanilla and chocolate makes it come off a bit like a chocolate bar—and that’s a good thing.”

Wibby Moondoor Dunkel

Aroma: “A lively combination of light roasts of coffee, toast, and chocolate. It’s joined by a subtle earthy and spicy hops aroma mixed with dried cherries and a hint of corn. All well-balanced and coming off as clean.” Flavor: “The malt has some nice toffee and dark cherry character, but it’s a bit overwhelmed by the roast astringency that overpowers things a bit. Some caramelized sweetness dances around to help mellow it overall. The finish is dry, with lingering coffee and grassy hop bitterness.” Overall: “Toastier than a biergarten in August, but some surprising hops aromatics that complement the roasted aromas and flavors nicely.”

Dovetail Brewery Rauch Doppelbock

Assertive beechwood smoke—neither acrid nor harsh—swaddles toasty malt in the aroma. Flavor is plenty smoky—rich dark malt has enough sweetness to balance it. Slightly cloying profile, emphasizing caramel and toffee. Needs a crisper foundation. Finish is sweet and lingering.

Industrial Arts Torque Wrench

Aroma: “A barrage of lemon citrus, herbal, resin, pine. We can smell the hops burn coming.” Flavor: Lots of piney dankness that could use a bit more malt to balance it out. Light mango, a little orange-juice character, too. The bitterness lingers long. A throwback to the bitter wars of IPA.” Overall: “Overall, this is a pretty solid DIPA, but it sure does not hide the booze and also has a touch of hops burn that gets stronger the more you drink.”
