pHriem Family Brewers Down Under IPA

What the brewers say

“Say g’day to a grog brewed with some of Australia’s finest hops. pFriem Down Under IPA is a bright copper beer overflowing with notes of strawberry, kiwi, citrus, and huckleberry. So let’s raise our pints to a beer packed with more hops than a western brush wallaby.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Muted nose—a little floral, a bit grassy, dank, some lemon, a little pineapple. A bit herbal in the finish. Restrained medium-sweet malt.”

Flavor: “Sweet smooth fruity notes up front. Lemongrass, pineapple, grapefruit, a little melon, some orange, subtle light stone fruit. Bitterness is moderate and cuts the sweetness well.

Overall: “Very classic with lots of grapefruit and lemon. Very drinkable. A fairly restrained IPA, but all of the parts work well together.”

Radiant Beer Co We Meet Again

“Sharp, juicy fruit aroma. A moderate amount of hop bitterness tempered by the fruity sweetness of melon, apricot, pineapple, navel orange, light banana. The finish is relatively clean with a mellow bitterness lingering on the tongue. Balanced. Light and drinkable with a pleasant and deftly put together hop profile.”

pFriem Family Brewers IPA

__Aroma:__ “Orange, grapefruit, lemon, and pine. Grassy, herbal. Some pineapple, mango and a touch of vanilla-like sweetness. The malt is subtle—light and vaguely sweet.” __Flavor:__ Nice sweetness up front. Some notes of grapefruit, a little orange, slight lemon. A little pine. Well balanced with significant bitterness to cut the lightly toasted sweetness. Light body, clean semisweet malt. __Overall:__ A pretty standard West Coast IPA. Nice citrus notes with some pine and tropical fruit. The balance with the bitterness worked well, but it could use a touch of malt complexity. Clean and crisp, and very sessionable for a beer of evident strength.

Jagged Mountain Brewery Texas Suitcase

“Subdued aroma of mild orange peel, soft pine resin, guava, light pilsner malt sweetness. The flavor continues the same trajectory with biscuit and pie crust, black pepper, anise, grapefruit peel, light resin, and grass. Malt sweetness helps showcase bitterness in the finish.”
