What the brewers say

“A stronger version of our classic Hell but made with richer malts, alt- und neu-Bavarian hops, and a proprietary lager yeast.”

What our panel thought

“Bright citrus intertwines with herbal, floral notes; light bread floats in the background. Slight sweetness up front; citrus and herbs remain teammates in flavor. Distinct floral bitterness. Dries out nicely. Could have a few rounds of this on a hot patio.”

What our editors thought

“Earthy-hop nose with lower-key honey-sweet note. On the sip, a concise yet creamy, almost cacao-like bitterness wraps around sweet-ish malt center. Unique, intriguing.”

Kings County Brewers Collective Welcome to the Underworld

“Big white head with tight bubbles and a brilliantly clear, yellow color. Bright floral notes in the aroma. Touch of sulfur really adds structure. The first sip delivers crisp malt, a soft and slight sweetness, and a very clean, crisp, dry finish. These components expertly dance around each other creating a pleasant impression. A well-crafted beer.”

Surly Brewing Co Hell

A pronounced hops bitterness on the finish is bracing and almost drowns out the malt profile. Still, for those looking for a helles with hops, this will satisfy. Traditionalists might bemoan the end result. It's hard to have more than two.

Grains of Wrath Crypt Keeper

Enticing Life Savers/Gummy Worm candy fruit nose; woody tropical hops, low bready malt. Medium-high bitterness with a fresh-squeezed orange-grapefruit hop flavor. Easy-going, fruity, juicy, finishing clean and dryish. Could handle a bit more bite for structure. Straightforwardly fruity, lovable, very easy to drink, with unconventional and appealing hop flavor.
