Fonta Flora Brewery The Pearl

What the brewers say

“A pilsner-style lager brewed with oyster shells.”

What our panel thought

“Very little aroma, just a wisp of white bread. Sweet cereal maltiness interplays with a substantial salty, mineral presence. Low hop bitterness, but the minerality helps pull together a relatively clean finish. There is a hint of shellfish, but it’s a hint and not overpowering.”

What our editors thought

“Vinous sur lees umami notes in the nose with a touch of Noble floral background. Herbal spice in the sip with a lime brightness, full without feeling heavy.”

Big Grove Brewery Iowa City Lager

“Water-cracker and gentle Noble-hop aromatics; not a lot of malt character. Perfumey, balanced American interpretation of German pilsner. Balanced and clean. Just not at the intensity we’d look for in this style.”

Wiley Roots Brewing Co Beer Flavored Beer

“Brilliant golden in color with large bubbles in a lingering white head. Fresh doughy malt aroma, light herbal hops. Clean bready malt, sweet grain, just a hint of earthy hops and an off dry finish. The sweetness overpowers the balance, leaving one wanting a little more hop bitterness to help. A very refreshing example. No flaws are detected and the finish is clean and brite. This is clean, refreshing and pleasant, but it is begging for a touch more hop balance, particularly in bitterness.”

Fonta Flora Brewery The Pearl

“A bit sweeter with more esters than expected for a pils, but quite drinkable. Light hints of floral and pine hide behind dank and musty notes in the aroma. Just a hint of wood-like character. Oddly crisp and finishes on the sweeter side of bitter.”
