Foothills Brewing Dead & Berried Imperial Stout

What the brewers say

"Aged in Woodford Reserve barrels and finished with Oregon blackberries."

What our panel thought

“Dark berries, fudge, roast, and licorice on the nose. In the flavor, robust roast, berry tartness, and bitterness shove sweetness to the back. Tootsie Roll and caramel as it warms.”

What our editors thought

“On the vinous side of barrel-aged stouts, it feels less ‘berry-driven’ in the nose than some others that lack actual berries. On the sip, the fruit is again more vinous jammy.”

Foothills Brewing Dead and Berried

Spicy dark malt accentuated by the bourbon-barrel character. The fruit additions add a lively tartness. Finish is soft for the style, with a fruity sweetness. Much more drinkable than many examples of the style.

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company Single Barrel Anarchy Project

“Moderate vanilla merges with chocolate, roasted malt, and bread crust in the aroma. Roast coffee-like malt character dominates the flavor; vanilla, caramel, and chocolate support and complement.”

Elysian Brewing Dragonstooth Stout

“Muted aroma with soft hints of espresso, chocolate. Light pine/citrus hoppiness, dark roast, caramel body to balance. Well-integrated and balanced malt richness with some underlying alcoholic heat.”
