Hacienda Beer Co Soul Memory

What the brewers say

“Our nontraditional black lager with a super pronounced roast profile.”

What our panel thought

“Roast and chocolate-malt aroma notes with a hint of smoke that jumps out of the glass. The bitter roast flavor comes across more coffee-forward with a subtle bitter cacao note lingering. Clean and crisp, but heavy roast notes create an impression of heft more perceived than real. Finishes bitter but not harsh.”

What our editors thought

“Dark and enveloping rich smoky nose. The sip is a touch thin and vaguely ashy, with over-extracted coffee notes.”

Unsung Brewing Vater Von Pils

“Strong, classic hop aromatics: fennel, lemongrass, sage. Sticky bread dough. Hop character dominates palate from start to finish. Sticky bread dough peeks through as waves of herbs and earth sweep over. Tastes like it didn’t finish fermenting; could be drier. Bitterness lingers. Lacks depth.”

Halfway Crooks Beer Zero Cool

“Bright lemon, candied lemon, rosemary notes in the aroma. Smooth, crisp flavor, with lemon zest and lemon flesh dominating a low bread backbone. Rosemary notes show up later and linger into a lemony herbal finish.”

Cellarmaker Wild Gooseberry Chase

Diverse aromas: black peppercorns, lemon, mushroom, lemongrass, grape must. Aromas weave seamlessly into flavor, with pronounced grapefruit pith lingering from front to back. Soft sweetness lifts the fruity grape character. Bitterness is a bit restrained, allowing the vinous notes to linger.
