Hi-Wire Brewing - South Slope Specialty Brewery 10W-40 Bourbon Barrel-Aged

What the brewers say

“Brewed with chocolate, coffee, vanilla, lactose; aged in Bulleit bourbon barrels.”

What our panel thought

“Aroma of coconut, licorice, coffee, light caramel. Dark chocolate, coffee notes lead the sip followed by a pleasant lingering bitterness. Subsequent sips give the impression of a Dark Chocolate Almond Joy. Firm bitterness balances the sweetness.”

What our editors thought

“Citrusy hops add a smart overtone to the bourbon, coffee, chocolate of the aroma. The sip eschews sweetness for a direct, American-stout bitterness softened somewhat by modest bourbon and vanilla, but it’s no dessert stout.”

Fifty West Brewing Maple Coffee Death Valley Shootout

Cohesive blend of coffee and maple syrup across the nose; light fruit and green-pepper notes. Big, round, soft body. Layers of fruit-forward coffee, chocolate, maple. Sweet, restrained finish with roast that hampers drinkability. Underlying stout seems light; barrel adds spice that a richer beer would balance.

Stonecloud Brewing Co. Fluffy Fingers - Chocolate Orange

“Bold orange zest combines with notes of vanilla and subtle hints of chocolate. Bright orange notes in the flavor create a sense of crispness in the sip balanced by vanilla and chocolate elements. Interesting, enjoyable sipper.”

Burgeon Beer Company Invita

“Surprisingly floral and aromatic on the nose. Effervescence amplifies the light hop character, though it doesn’t dominate or become distracting. Slightly tart finish, water comes across with a bit of mineral bite. A nice modern take on a light Mexican lager.”
