Highland Park Brewery Bortz
What the brewers say
“Crisp, chocolatey, roasty, and very drinkable, with visuals of dark mahogany and tinges of carnelian gemstone. Named after our former brewer’s Dungeons & Dragons character.”
What our panel thought
“Opaque, with deep garnet highlights at the edges, with a large but not overly persistent head. Big chocolate notes dominate the aroma. As that settles, more light roast appears. Very clean, no esters. Very smooth, sporting a medium-low roast profile with a hint of chocolate in the finish and aftertaste. Bittering and flavor hops don’t stand out, but support and enhance this wonderful concoction. Easy-drinking, with flavor to keep me coming back for more.”
What our editors thought
“Toasty nose with very light roast and a faint hint of barbecue sweetness in the back. Weightless in the sip, defying expectation with a simple bready malt, only the faintest roast undertones, and a very subtle, bready sweetness that somehow remains lean.”
