What the brewers say

“Hoax is a behemoth of a beer joining its fellow crafty lineup of misfits—Trickery, Foolery, and Ruse—which have landed among the most highly rated milk stouts in the world. Aged in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Expect a super chewy milk stout with bold oak tannins and notes of grape jam, ripe plums, and dried dates.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Rich dark chocolate up front with lots of booze. There’s some heavily roasted malt that’s a touch inky and some very dark caramel. A touch of umami peeks through with plum, dried cherry, and currants.”

Flavor: “Rich and chewy, lots of dark chocolate and dried fruit, with a strong boozy finish. It’s extremely complex without being cloying. Thick and potent with alcohol lingering in the aftertaste.”

Overall: “The booze wins! Super-

intense with a lot of diverse flavors in small amounts that add up to a great drinking experience.”
