Hoppin' Frog Brewing Rye B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher - Batch # 400

What the brewers say

"A wonderful, crisp, old-world beer flavor is imparted to our flagship Imperial Stout from an abundance of both sweet malted rye and spicy non-malted rye to add variety and celebrate brewing our 400th batch of B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout."

What our panel thought

“Aroma of roast barley, stone fruit, earthy hops, and heady alcohol. Coffee notes of roasted barley and moderate caramel sweetness meld with the hop flavor; spicy rye provides accent.”

What our editors thought

“Beautifully thick pour. The nose pulls forest pine needle and bark, the sip pushes a dry woody, tannic roast malt with just a touch of residual sweetness. Classically bold.”

Hoppin' Frog B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher

__Aroma:__ “Coffee and chocolate, with lots of roast. Rich and slightly sweet, with a touch of molasses, cherry, raisin, dark plum, blackberry, and fruity esters. Light smoke, with some rich Munich-type malt in the background, and maybe a hint of herbal hops.” __Flavor:__ “Moderately sweet, with the dark fruity esters dominating up front and transitioning into a dark-chocolate character, for a cherry-cordial note. Notes of roast, smoke, coffee, and malt bitterness are balanced by the sweetness. The smooth mouthfeel mellows out the alcohol heat. Finishes with light smoke, chocolate, light cherries, and a touch of alcohol.” __Overall:__ “Ideal sweetness is balanced by a mix of acrid malt, hops, and alcohol. It’s an obviously big imperial stout with all the right stuff—an intensely complicated beer that continues to reveal new and fascinating flavors with every sip.”

Upland Brewing Teddy Bear Kisses

__Aroma:__ “A nice medium roast on the nose, with secondary notes of bitter and semisweet chocolate. There’s a fair amount of caramel and dark toffee on the nose that pairs nicely with the roast, but the earthy aroma at the back really dominates. Initially, it almost comes across as a chocolate latte.” __Flavor:__ “Bitter chocolate covers the mouth with some extreme roast character, which gives it a slight wood and tobacco presence. The roast really dominates with a chewy flavor, as if biting into an espresso bean−laced dark chocolate bar. The mouthfeel is fantastic, and coats the cheeks. Finishes with hoppy bitterness, cigar, and tobacco notes.” __Overall:__ “A very good beer. The chocolaty sweetness comes through on the nose and holds on just long enough to balance the roast and cigar notes.”

Breakside Brewery Space Music

“Spicy tequila-like booziness pervades across a chocolate and raisin aroma. Sipping brings chocolate, cherries, cinnamon, and caramel. The finish is on the sweeter side of dry.”
