Sun King Brewery Jimmy Jam

What the brewers say

“Jimmy Jam Flanders is a Belgian-style Flanders Ale fermented over grapes in a red wine barrel to produce a pronounced and tart berry flavor, wine-like dryness, and bright fruit character.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Purple grape juice, vanilla, blackberries, spice, chocolate, and balanced vinegar. Red-wine-like character emerges with raspberries cherry fruit notes. Some dry tartness and a little phenolic.”

Flavor: “Sweet and dry at the same time. Sweetness hits up front with red grape and cherry-like qualities. Fruit notes of raspberry and prune. A little lemon adds complexity and a slight tartness. Very interesting transition on the swallow—up front it’s light, with an apple-like fruit character, which changes to a deeper finish with hints of cherry and dark malt. The sourness complements throughout, the finish is dry and lingering with a nice tannic/wood character.”

Overall: “A complex Flanders Red–style beer lightened up with grape and red-wine character. Red-fruit notes augment the red-grape notes, but it drinks lighter than the color and nose suggest.”

Destihl Flanders Red

**Aroma:** “Some malt sweetness of caramel, biscuit, melanoidin malt, and toast up front. Next up is the dark fruits, including cherries, raspberries, plum, and raisin. The woody spice from the hops warms with light, pleasant spicy notes, and a hint of lemony tartness.” **Flavor:** “Sharp sour up front, with a bit of metallic character. Lemon juice sour notes are followed by malt notes of biscuit, toast, and a hint of caramel—a dark malt background that keeps the acidity in check. The finish is a bit tart and lingers.” **Overall:** “Interesting concept, but the strong metallic character and acidity make this a hard sell. The fruity complexity is amazing, with a sangria-like or mulled wine fruit character. There are individual characteristics within this beer that are nice, but the sum is slightly less than those parts.”

Sun King Brewery Magpie Muckle

Aroma: “Smells like a great dessert bread. Honey mead, grapes, burnt sugar, crème brûlée, and flowers—very intriguing.” Flavor: “Grapes! Root Beer! Cherry Jolly Ranchers! There is a lot going on in this beer. Malt forward and sweet but not too sweet. Sweet notes of caramel, toast, and honey. Fruit notes of prunes and plums add complexity and sweetness. Some burnt sugar. A bit of oak. Enjoyed the carbonation, and there is a dryness that helps to cut some of the sweetness.” Overall: “Buy this beer—refreshingly interesting and sublimely crafted. The barrel character is unexpected yet extraordinarily complementary to the beer. It’s a potent, smooth. velvet hammer.”

Original Ritterguts Gose

**Aroma:** “Sweet tart acidity is present in the nose, with fruity notes of apple, cherries, dark grape, and some sweet wheat. Light lemon and salt, with very faint malt and some earthy funk. Light sour emerges as it warms. Overall, the aromas are light, refreshing, and unassertive.” **Flavor:** “Hints of apple with some mild tartness, and the noticeable salty character adds flavor. The malt expresses a bread-like sweetness with some subtle spices that add complexity. Lactic tartness hits up front and carries through the finishing sip. The moderate grape adds a touch of light, watery vinegar for background depth. A dry carbonic bite carries in the finish.” **Overall:** “A little high on the salt and low on the carbonation, but still refreshing. A bit more body would have rounded it out, but overall, some great subtle fruit flavors. Straightforward and highly drinkable.”
