What the brewers say

Smooth drinking dark lager with slight roast and subtle malt sweetness

What our panel thought

"A nice toasted bread crust aroma greets the nose, along with some low earthy notes. Rich, prominent roast character. Relatively complex, bread crust and notes of coffee. Roast masks some sweetness, caramel and dark fruit. Lightly astringent finish. Quite bitter in balance, and grassy with grapefruit zest notes."

What our editors thought

"Clear brown color, beige foam, red highlights, clear. Pleasant nose, treacle-forward but not overly sweet, with some nice dried-herbal hop contours. Nicely balanced flavor, lightly sweet up front, pretty well rounded with an herbal, black tea–like bitterness that lingers in a nice way, through a drying finish. There is a slight roughness to the bitterness that, while enjoyable, might be off-putting for a typical 'dark beer drinker.' Could bear more body and malt depth for a Czech style, but it's very drinkable as-is, and the bitterness adds an addictive quality."
