Kros Strain Brewing Company Barrleywine Vol.12 Sandhills Crane

What the brewers say

“Barleywine-style ale aged 24 months in Elijah Craig barrels. Aromas and flavors of marshmallow, cinnamon, tobacco, cherry, orange, oak spice with a slight boozy finish.”

What our panel thought

“Heavy baker’s chocolate with dark fruit (prunes, cherries, figs), whoppers, tannic oak vanillin, milk chocolate, and rich, concentrated red grapes. Slight aged oxidation notes create welcome complexity.”

What our editors thought

“The aroma pulls together disparate notes—dark fruit with a pronounced vinous quality, vaguely orange-tinged hops, deeper chocolate and caramel notes—with remarkable aplomb and unmatched refinement for an almost sangria-like spectrum. In the flavor, orange top notes glisten over a deeper milk-chocolate body—Terry’s Chocolate Orange in full effect—while the lingering ethanol note springs into the finish for a sharp and intentional coda. Both artful and fearless in its approach to the blend.”
