Live Oak Brewing Co Old Treehugger Barleywine

What the brewers say

“Wine-strength ale made entirely with our base barley malt.”

What our panel thought

“Strong orange and light pine hop dominate aroma. Light caramel sweetness brings forward sweeter citrus notes and plum esters. Strong caramel sweet malt dominates. Hop flavor stays orange, subdued by the overall sweetness. Light cherry and apricot esters add complexity. Finishes sweet, overriding the hops.”

What our editors thought

“Bold citrus and grape Pixy Stix candy notes in the nose. In the sip, dry white grape notes jut out from a sharp caramel base, sculpted and succinct.”

Good Word Brewing & Public House Toque

“Sweet caramel dominates the muted aroma. Ester-forward with plum and apricot. A hint of alcohol and acetyl appears as it warms. Strong malt-forward flavor—caramel, toast, and a low chocolate note. Clean alcohol grows a bit hot in the finish. Primed for aging.”

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. The Tree That Owns Itself (2021)

“Classic toffee and caramel notes merge with a juniper-like botanical spice in the nose along with hints of oak, leather, and tobacco. That lightly pine-like spice punctuates the caramel, vanilla, and coconut sweetness along with a coarse oaky earthiness and hints of tobacco.”

Live Oak Brewing Co Big Bark Amber Lager

“Effervescent with a frothy white head that refuses to quit. Spicy hops and a sweet, honey malt character in the nose. Sticky sweet honey tangerine flavor, a light malt backbone that helps balance, but drinks fairly light all around. Refreshing and well executed, restrained but interesting.”
