Terrapin Beer Luau Krunkles

What the brewers say

Flavors of passion fruit, orange, and guava make this IPA an instant vacation.

What our panel thought

Strong fruit (mostly orange) aromas up front. The passion fruit and guava come out nicely in the body, with a decent backing bitterness to keep it from being one-dimensional alcopop fruit juice. Finish is relatively crisp. The fruit additions are really well balanced without being over the top or adding weird harsh edges.

What our editors thought

Pineapple and passion fruit dominate the intensely fruity nose with tropical flair. The sip is a touch more beer-ish, with a mild pithy bitterness offering the lightest of structures to the fruit-forward flavor.

Alvarado Street DeLorean Dust

Peach, orange, light papaya, and a little banana come together for a nice tropical mix. The flavor brings the citrus forward into a slightly oilier version, with a bit of coconut and cherry blended in. Mild alcoholic warmth and spice while the fruit cocktail lingers into the finish. Good malt sweetness in the main sip, but the finish is pleasantly dry.

King Harbor Brewing Co Between the Devil and the Deep

“Coconut hop profile sideswipes right up next to citrus pith both in the nose and flavor. Beautiful and pillowy soft body; delicate sweetness underlies a mix of tropical hop character. Understated, but very well crafted and balanced.”

Upslope Tropical Fruit Sour

Aroma: “Massive tropical fruit character: intense passion fruit backed by citrus, with hints of Makrut lime, orange, guava, and passion fruit. It’s like Hawaii in a glass.” Flavor: “The fruit comes together really well. The sourness is a great mix of fruit tartness with underlying fermentation character; the passion fruit adds brightness; and the guava adds some body and a hint of floral character. The finish is relatively light. Very pleasant tart character without rough edges. Beer qualities are an afterthought, just enough to keep it from being thin.” Overall: “A more modern take on this style that showcases the fruit expertly and singularly.”
