TRVE Brewing Co. Meditation is the Practice of Death

What the brewers say

"Non-traditional spontaneous beer aged on Colorado tart cherries for six months in wine barrels."

What our panel thought

"Rich fruit character, though not distinctly cherry; also Brett, wood, and earth. Lack of head suggests wine. Oak character adds pleasant light spiciness, with fruit fermentation esters; tart, with berry notes. Subtle yet complex."

What our editors thought

"Beer-forward, not fruit-forward; light funk and faint cherry drive the nose. The sip morphs from an expectation of sweetness into an herbal funk with a hint of cherry. Acidity remains contrite."

Resident Culture Farm Mentality

No carbonation. Light, balanced acidity in the aroma; light floral notes; some moderate wood and a whiskey-like spirit that becomes dominant as it warms. Moderate, balanced acid. Nice complexity; a hint of leathery funk, moderate pear, white grape esters. Light woody vanilla in finish. Clean, elegant.

American Solera Foeder Cerise

Aroma of cherry pie, down to light clove spice, an almond note, and crust-like melanoidin. Cherry for days with the first swallow, but low carbonation seems to flatten the flavor. Not aggressively tart or sweet. Stones leave a lingering marzipan-like sweet impression. Well-done but a bit one dimensional.

Scratch Brewing Company Strawberry Sumac

Strawberries blend with a sweet, fruity/spicy malt character, suggesting a Belgian golden. Nicely balanced acid and fruit. The flavor stays harmonious, offering a light tart lemony balance to the strawberry sweetness and pulling along some peach. Each sip brings more depth from everything but the strawberries, whether it's a spicy tingle or citrus brightness. Lingers nicely.
