Mikerphone Brewing Flip The Switch

What the brewers say

Imperial Czech-style dark lager.

What our panel thought

Mild aroma of roasted malt, bitter chocolate, and hints of caramel meld with a floral hop aroma to create an intriguing nose. The flavor pits the caramel sweetness against the roasty bitterness, leaving the perfume-like Noble hop notes to negotiate a settlement. The denouement comes in the form of a truce with the only clear winner holding the glass.

What our editors thought

Crispy breadstick and caramel apple in the nose. The sip is soft with a gentle rolling sweetish chocolate-croissant feel. Indulgent without the cleansing bitterness. A dark lager for pastry beer lovers.

Aurora Ale & Lager Dark Ascent

Aroma offers heady mix of cocoa, mocha, caramel, coconut, and big maple syrup. On the palate, mocha offers more support to the maple. Pleasant notes of fig, dried cherry, raisin. A bit acrid on the finish, like darkest chocolate with campfire smoke.

New Anthem Beer Project Dance Floor Heater

Surprisingly Noble-like aroma, plus lime rind and pith. Nicely balanced flavor. Malt sweetness plays well with funky hops—an intermingling of citrus, tropical fruit, and grassy notes. Dry finish, lingering bitterness. The more I drink, the more it really grows on me.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co Double Mind Haze

“Compelling nose with notes of bubblegum, cotton candy, tangerine, and orange peel. Soft, elegant, cloud-like body. Flavors of orange, tangerine, and grapefruit with just a bit of diesel and pepper. Finish mostly dry, with a nice drop off in hop flavor.”
