Schilling Beer Co. Modernism

What the brewers say

“It features a deep complexity from the decoction process and a hop schedule typical of Bohemian beers.”

What our panel thought

“In the nose, light malt swaddled in inviting floral hops. Leans hoppy in flavor and bitterness; finishes with a light lingering burnt note. Roast malt melds well with bitterness, but closer to a ‘black pale ale.’ Nice underlying malt depth, but you have to search.”

What our editors thought

“Earthy hop nose leads with forest and rustic bread. Body veers austere, with layered malt and dark-chocolate bitterness. Finishes quickly without some of the pleasant malt notes.”

Schilling Beer Co. Alexandr 10°

“Soapy-floral aroma with layers of green apple and floral hops; doughy, crackery, lightly toasty. Pleasant bready malt flavor and enjoyable Noble-hop notes, but the parts fall short of coalescing into a well-rounded package. Amped-up carbonation is distracting to malt profile.”

King's Road Brewing Company El Capitan

“Fairly hop-forward aroma, floral and herbal with a hint of apple peel. Bread crust and toasty malt in the flavor with apple that continues in the finish. Not quite clean, but the herbal hop bitterness balances the rich toast and roasted nuts and accents the rich malty notes well.”

Rockwell Beer Co. Static

“Deep brown; solid head retention, brilliant clarity. Elegant roast—chocolate malt, bread crust—and lovely floral hops. Initially crisp, rolling into full-flavored malty roast—toast, chocolate, coffee, light caramel; pronounced earthy-spicy hops meld well with the malt. Clean, refreshing.”
