What the brewers say

“Cocoa nibs and shells from Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company give this beer its great taste! An appetizing cold-weather treat, this sweet stout is rich creamy and uniquely satisfying.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Dark and milk chocolate, slight coffee, a little vanilla, cherry, toast, and a bit of roast in the finish. Rich roasted dark chocolate sweetness.”

Flavor: “This beer has a really nice smoothness through the flavor. There is a pleasant chocolate sweetness from the roast that tastes of chocolate but is not overpowering. A little vanilla comes through and some slight coffee. The sweetness carries through, but it is never too sweet. Roast in the finish helps to dry it out.”

Overall: “This beer came together and blended really well. It's enjoyable how the malt sweetness was showcased but nothing was overpowering, and it is not sweet all the way through, drying out just a touch at the finish. It is very chocolaty, but it all just worked. I could drink a lot of this.”

Schlafly Vanilla Milk Stout

__Aroma:__ “An earthy roastiness leads up front, with notes of baker’s chocolate and vanilla and a light sweetness in the back. These aromas give way to a really nice coffee-and-cream aroma as the chocolate dissipates.” __Flavor:__ “A nice milk sweetness up front is ushered in by light, not-too-sweet chocolate notes that work well with the vanilla. Smooth roast character is evident in the back and provides a great balance to the sweetness. Dark cherry and black walnut notes hang in the background. The body is medium and creamy, and it finishes sweet and round, yet dry enough to invite another sip.” __Overall:__ “Chocolate flavors abound, without being overly sweet. A pleasing complexity of sweet combined with cherry and walnut notes, and new flavors are detectable in each sip. It’s everything one looks for in a sweet stout, and the balance was spot on. It was like eating chocolate pie with a cup of coffee.”

Maplewood Brewing Company Fat Pug

“Smooth, light chocolate aroma with no esters. Pleasant low oatmeal notes add complexity. Smooth body with well-balanced bitterness and medium sweetness that lingers. Carbonation is a touch high but clears the palate. Medium chocolate and low roast with smooth oatmeal notes.”

Tallgrass Brewing Company Buffalo Sweat

**Aroma:** “Rich roasty notes with medium chocolate, light coffee. A little nutty.” **Flavor:** “Roasty chocolate up front with a slight brightness to it. A smooth creaminess hits in the front and carries through. The creaminess blends with some chocolate roast character to provide the taste of a light milk chocolate bar. Medium vanilla and roasted coffee as it starts to warm. The oats come through to support. The finish is quite dry.” **Overall:** “Very creamy and smooth character from the oats and lactose make this an easy-drinking stout. There was a nice sweetness and balance from the roasty character. The chocolate and toasty malt character come through nicely. This was a well executed oatmeal cream stout that I could session all evening long.”
