River Rat Brewery My Morning Stout

What the brewers say

“Start your day off the River Rat way with notes of cacao nibs, oats, Madagascar vanilla, and a jolt from our exclusive blend of Jittery Joe's coffee. Goes nicely with a walk of shame and a Denver omelet.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Dark caramel up front, with a low level of raisin evident on the first whiff. The roasted character lends Special B character with some plum. Hints of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, toast, burnt toffee. Low, earthy hops aroma, and as it warms, the yeast character becomes more evident.”

Flavor: “The flavor comes through as chocolate milk, with some plum esters and flavor. The milky creaminess is evident and provides an interesting contrast. There are hints of coffee, sweet chocolate, cacao nibs, and toffee, as well as burnt roast notes and artificial sweetener. The body is on the thin side, yet the malt lingers into the finish.”

Overall: “Overall, this is an interesting beer that confused me to some degree. The fruity esters up front were evident in the flavor, but gave way to the chocolate. It has a thin body with burnt toffee evident in the finish and lacked the malty complexity to round it out. Still, it was a rich, sweet chocolate drink that had a decadent quality that was enjoyable.”

Broken Strings Brewery Sugared Stout Gang Peanut

Massive salty peanut butter nose with some milk chocolate and light fig/prune fruitiness. Hints of espresso and cocoa. Creaminess of the peanut dries out the finish and lingers. Full body, low carb, smooth alcohol, highlights the peanut well.

Saint Arnold Brewing Company Winter Stout

**Aroma:** “High fruity note similar to a Belgium with cherry, figs, raisins, orange. A candy-like aroma, perhaps like a cherry sucker. Toasty malt. Slightly oxidized. There is also a sweet milk chocolate aroma. Lots of malt sweetness. Slight coffee. A creaminess is present on the nose.” **Flavor:** “This comes across like a Belgian dubbel. High cherry note up front with a medium sweetness that slowly fades into a low bitterness with slight acidity. A light roast in the middle of the sip. The bitterness toward the end of the sip transitions into the aftertaste. Thin-to-medium body that is cut by the carbonation. Same esters as on the nose with some dark roast chocolate and toasted bread notes. Finishes with an interesting combination of the sweetness from the esters and a low-medium carbonic acid dryness. This beer has a flavor of vanilla cola.” **Overall:** “It’s enjoyable and sweet, but is this a stout? I get more fruity Belgian-like notes. As it warms, there is a bit of chocolate toward the very end. This could be a stout, but not a sweet stout. The aftertaste is too dry and astringent. A confusing beer for a sweet stout, given all of the strong Belgian-like esters and the carbonic ester finish.”

Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout Nitro

**Aroma:** “Strong roasted malt character with sweet creamy lactose coming through. Some chocolate and coffee notes provide a bit of malt complexity. Very pleasant chocolate milk up front, some black licorice, some mild earthiness and pepper. Very sweet on the nose in a classically lactose way.” **Flavor:** “Wonderful round chocolaty sweetness. If it were the right color I would swear I was drinking chocolate milk with a touch of coffee. Chocolate flavors are complex, from semisweet to cacao nib. Nice mild roast with a touch of bitterness to balance the sweetness. Very subtle dark fruit ester notes. Finish is balanced with a lingering roastiness.” **Overall:** “An amazing beer. A very tasty milk stout with a bit more pronounced roastiness for the style, but very well executed. Very sweet from start to finish with hints of chocolate and lactose.”
