Jackie O’s Brewery Oil of Aphrodite

What the brewers say

An American double stout brewed with locally harvested black walnuts and Belgian candied syrup. A sweet and rich springboard for deep nuttiness.

What our panel thought

Aromas of raisin, dried fruit, and candied strawberry are more reminiscent of a Belgian dark strong. The fla-vor profile fairly quickly changes course as it delivers a noticeable roast, toast, and chocolate-malt punch with those classic Belgian notes moving to express themselves in the background along with some subtle nutti-ness. The overall package is unusual but surprisingly interesting.

What our editors thought

Subtly sharp acrid notes give the nose an edge that would otherwise be lost to the slightly buttery and rich umami notes. The sip is more straightforward and porter-like, with faint roast and a light nutty sweetness that quickly dissipates.

Single Hill Brewing Company Reserve - Osa Major

“Alcoholic heat in the nose obscures hints of roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. Booze carries into the flavor, stripping away more subtle complexities. Roasty, smoky, with pleasantly malty profile.”

Jackie O’s Brewery Coconut & Vanilla Rum Barrel Oil of Aphrodite

Boozy nose with aged dark-malt character, hints of dried cherries and soy sauce. A bit thin, but with rich dark fruit and chocolate. Dry roasted finish. Strong rum and vanilla notes add a nice spiciness to the swallow.

Salty Nut Brewery Make Stout Great Again

**Aroma:** “Notes of chocolate up front, with some creamy milk sweetness. The roast malt dominates on the nose, with a tart black-cherry ester and slight clove. It’s roasty, earthy, and oaky, with tobacco and a campfire smokiness.” **Flavor:** “Burned roast hits up front, and the roasty malt character carries through the sip. Some milk and chocolate sweetness sit behind the roast, with notes of licorice, cherries, plum, and other dark fruits. It’s a very earthy beer with fruity esters potentially from the hops, but for sure from the roast. Notes of oak, pine, and the big hops bitterness leads to a dry finish. The body is a bit thin.” **Overall:** “Overall, it’s a ‘punch you in the mouth’ kind of stout that delivers on a roast-forward presence. The more I drank, the more it grew on me. The roast has a finesse with some evident fruit flavors, in both aroma and flavor, but the burned characteristics really shone through. Reminded me of sitting at a campfire on a cold winter night, with ashes flying and coals burning.”
