Funkwerks Oud Bruin

What the brewers say

“Aroma of dark malts and black cherry complement the notes of dark fruit in the flavor. A blend of Brettanomyces with Lactobacillus and other sour cultures contributes the characteristic sour-flavor profile of this style.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Tart apple sourness with underlying dark malt, dried fruit (cherry and black currant) notes, dark unsweetened chocolate, and a pleasant woodsy character. Perfect for a Flanders reddish/brownish old ale.”

Flavor: “The malt complexity has dried cherries, prunes, black currants, chocolate, and tobacco but comes across relatively dry on the finish. This is balanced by a pleasant underlying sourness that adds to the fruity character. The woodsy character adds nice astringency on the finish and adds to the perception of dryness.”

Overall: “A fantastic example of a complex, dark, sour beer with wild- fermentation character. Great balance throughout. Subtle complexity from the initial sniff through the lingering swallow that gets better as it warms. Expertly crafted Oud Bruin–style beer.”

PFriem Family Brewers Oud Bruin Kriek

Delicate raspberry-citrus aroma, with barrel funk and crushed lemons in an old wooden pail. Flavor brings dark fruit, tart cherry, red currant, tomato—nicely balancing malty sweetness and acidity. Balsamic edge tickles the tonsils. Delicate, smooth finish.

Heavy Seas Beer Siren Noire

**Aroma:** “Sweet malt character and dark fruit sweetness with notes of cherry, plums, and prunes. Nice vanilla character plus sweet chocolate that comes through nicely and dominates in the nose. Roast is subtle, with a hint of espresso.” **Flavor:** “The chocolate character dominates and carries through but isn’t overpowering. The roast character helps to balance the sweetness, and it sits nicely on the finish. Vanilla and cocoa round out the beer with a nice warming character. The oak-barrel character adds some nice complexity and is in balance with the beer. Hops are a friendly afterthought.” **Overall:** “Very chocolaty and very enjoyable. Subtle tobacco and vanilla are very welcome additions to the barrel character, setting this one apart from others and adding another dimension of complexity, yet not at all busy.”

Funkwerks Saison d'Brett

Aroma: “Lemon, Brett character, a touch of almond. Moderately spicy with a hint of mint. It smells like a liquid Newport cigarette. Rose petal and menthol, mmmm!” Flavor: “Almost a vanilla-like sweetness up front followed by a strong Brett presence. Mint, lemon, and orange. Barnyard funk overpowers a lot of the other subtle flavors. Well-carbonated.” Overall: “There are some different things going on in this beer, and it is a decent experience. Mouthfeel is spot-on for the style.”
