LambickX Oude Kriek 2013-2015

What the brewers say

“Kriek-lambic ale with cherries added.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Lots of oak, almost soapy with a floral, herbaceous note. Subtle fruity tartness with earthy notes that blend with the fruit to produce an overall subtle but rich aroma.”

Flavor: “Rich vinous cherry character, reminiscent of a semisweet red wine. Some oxidation that pairs well with the oak-barrel character. Finish is lightly tart, juicy cherry character. Comes across a bit flat despite a significant head initially.”

Overall: “Distinctive as a kriek. Heavy on a ripe cherry character with an aged-barrel quality, though it’s not overly sweet. Wine-like complexity, with a finish that highlights the oak and sweeter aspects of the fruit.”

Vanberg & DeWulf LambickX Oude Kriek

**Aroma:** “Medium cherry note that is thick and bold with a slight sweetness. Sweet and tart cherry character is very present in the nose with some floral, earthy, tea-like notes.” **Flavor:** “Moderate cherry note with very little sweetness and a hint of spice. The beer has a nice drying character after the start with some subtle tartness that’s mild but cleansing. Moderate carbonation is well-balanced with the tartness, and the linger is not too dry or too sweet. The acidic tartness helps to finish the beer out with a nice carbonation that leaves the beer a little warming.” **Overall:** “Moderate tart cherry notes with a good balance of carbonation. As it warms, a nice herbal note emerges. Very juicy, sweet cherry character with dry finish. The flavors worked well together and blended well. Not very bold for a sour but works well and enjoyable—an approachable sour.”

Amalgam Premiere Goat

Aroma: “Complex spicy, peppery character, with some stone fruit and a wee bit of barnyard weirdness. Light floral ‘aged’ hops. Slight papery notes with biscuity whiffs.” Flavor: “Funky malty sweetness that fades to a slightly tart/sour note. Tart fruit notes of pear, apple, and citrus. Malty sweet finish that becomes dryer and nuttier as it lingers in the mouth. Slight neutral oak flavors that become more prominent as it warms. Finish is slightly tannic, which dries and cleans up the swallow in place of hops character.” Overall: “This beer tastes like lightly sour funk biscuits that have been liquefied and clarified. Balanced flavors of honey, pear, and lemon complement the light but vigorous malty backbone. Enough wood character to contribute but not dominate. Very easy-drinking and refreshing.”

Brouwerij Boon Kriek Boon

**Aroma:** “Kind of funky with lots of sweet cherry aroma. As it warms slightly more barrel notes emerge. Smells like red wine. Sweet cherry fruity character dominates the nose.” **Flavor:** “Strong cherry flavor well matched with smooth acidity and light level of sweetness. Sweet but blends with a slight lemon tartness that keeps it from being too sweet. Very light funky note. Nice tartness/acidic/lactic character hits the roof of the mouth and adds nice complexity. High wine notes of cherry and moderate citrus notes, grapefruit and lime. Light carbonic bite then nice hit of acidity. Linger is dry with lasting fruity notes.” **Overall:** “Very juicy with a very light funky character. A well-done kriek with balance that was enjoyable. The subtleness blended well with the beer from the sweet cherry notes to the tart lactic character in this beer.”
